Best Family-Run Restaurant Award Winners – The Brilliant Restaurant

This is the tale of two brothers, Gulu and Kewal Anand, whose father, Bishen Dass (d. 1970), cooked Punjabi-Kenyan cuisine for Maharajas and high-ranking politicians.

The two brothers fled political turmoil in 1970’s Kenya to start a new life in Southall. After years of struggle they finally found their feet by cooking for friends from an old lock up garage in Southall. Brilliant is a heartwarming story of success, hard work and good North Indian Punjabi food inspired by Kenyan influences. And most importantly, family.

One of the frequent visitors to Brilliant is none other than Prince Charles, along with many film stars and famous names who travel across London to taste the legendary Brilliant dishes.

Today, Brilliant is still owned and run by one of the brothers – Gulu Anand. Kewal retired in 2010.

The Brilliant family line is continued by daughter Dipna and son Shanker who are slowly taking over the business.

The restaurant started as a 30 seater and has extended no less than 7 times. Now it is a 220 seat establishment. It has a private banqueting suite, outside catering business, cookery school and sells its own brand of pickles and chutneys.
